Tech-led biofuel startup Koko Networks launches new consumer goods business in Kenya

Image
Koko Networks , a Kenya-based bio-fuel technology enterprise has extended its business to cover other fast-moving consumer goods, through a new tech platform that will capitalize on its established distribution networks in low-income neighborhoods. Koko Club, its new business-line, will sell the products directly to consumers through the dukas (small shops) that currently serve as the company’s agents for its bio-ethanol cooking fuel and stoves. The Koko Club products, which will be displayed in designated spaces within the agents’ small shops, will only be sold to registered Koko Club members. The shop owners (agents) will use Koko’s PoS system to sign up customers, capturing their biodata, and issuing them with an electronic card that they will use when buying products from any Koko Club shop. We need to pay more attention to “age-tech”

For the last two years, many of us have only been able to see our elderly relatives through screens, watching them grow older, trading physical distance for their safety. More than anything else, the pandemic has highlighted the vulnerabilities of aging people. The tech community—founders, investors, journalists—all need to pay more attention to “age-tech.” “Age-tech” isn’t a niche sector, and aging populations aren’t limited to a few countries. According to a recent World Health Organization report , 1 in 6 people will be aged 60 years or over by 2030, while the number of people aged 80 years or over is expected to triple between 2020 and 2050 to 426 million. “While this shift in distribution of a country’s population toward older ages—known as population aging—started in high-income countries (for example Japan 30% of the population is already over 60 years old), it is now low- and middle-income countries that are experiencing the greatest change,” the report said. “By 2050, two-th

Waymo partners with Geely to make electric AVs for ride hail in the US

Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous driving technology arm, is partnering with Chinese automaker Geely to build an all-electric, self-driving ride-hailing vehicle. The companies will integrate Waymo Driver, Waymo’s AV system, into Geely’s Zeekr vehicles for use in U.S. markets “in the years to come.” While Waymo is not providing a specific time frame for either the start of production or when these vehicles are expected to hit the streets, the partnership signals that Waymo is pursuing a multi-platform approach to OEM partnerships. Waymo’s current ride-hail fleet is made up of Jaguar I-Paces and Chrysler Pacifica hybrids, which provide autonomous rides in Phoenix, Arizona . The company has also expanded its partnership with Stellantis, which owns Fiat Chrysler automobiles, to include local delivery services. Waymo’s plans with Geely should not have an effect on the company’s existing partnerships, according to a Waymo spokesperson. Zeekr, a luxury EV brand that Geely established in March ,

More companies bow out of in-person CES presence

Image
The last few days have been fairly quiet, so far as CES is concerned — no doubt owing to the holiday. The last major dropout came from Microsoft , which confirmed on Christmas Eve it would no longer be traveling to Las Vegas for the event. That news followed similar announcements from GM, Google, Lenovo, Intel, T-Mobile, AT&T, Meta, Twitter, Amazon, TikTok and Pinterest. A number of big names are still confirmed for next week’s show, including Samsung, LG, BMW, Qualcomm and Sony. As of December 23, the CTA noted that “over 2,200” companies were still planning to attend the show. I will say that, anecdotally, I’ve heard from a number of startups who have opted not to attend, and also plenty who are still planning to be at the show in-person. Today, some key companies have added their names to the list of the former, including AMD, MSI, OnePlus and Proctor & Gamble. A spokesperson for AMD confirmed the company’s decision in a statement to TechCrunch: After careful deliberati

Is cryptocurrency an alternative to remittances or an additive factor?

Alex Holmes Contributor Share on Twitter Alex Holmes is chairman and CEO of MoneyGram International , the global leader in the evolution of digital P2P payments. Governments around the world have been looking at adopting, regulating and even banning cryptocurrencies since the inception of Bitcoin. Ever since, the crypto ecosystem has been a rocket ship ride to the moon and back (multiple times). Today, it seems that more people than ever have hopped on for the ride. We’ve also seen a massive shift toward digital platforms across all industries as a result of the pandemic. Political leaders globally have followed suit by taking steps to move their economies in the same direction. One of the most recent examples is El Salvador, which made headlines by becoming the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender (a move that has since been protested by its citizens). In the initial announcement, the country’s president directly connected crypto as a competitor to remittance

Samsung’s C-Lab class features a diaper sensor, smart guitar and modular robot

Image
A number of high-profile exhibitors are opting out of next year’s CES. Samsung is among those big names sticking it out for next week’s show — which always proves a good exhibition of the company’s massive breadth in the electronics space, from TVs to washing machines to the occasional robot. Over the past couple of years, however, Samsung’s C-Lab division has been its CES secret weapon, showcasing some of the projects built by the company’s in-house incubator. Created by employees who are afforded the ability to create pet projects, C-Labs’ projects aren’t always practical, but they’re often fascinating. Effectively, they’re things that are traditionally out of the scope of a tech colossus like Samsung. Last year’s class, for instance, included an artificial window and smart highlighter. This year’s batch splits things into three categories: C-Lab Inside, C-Lab Outside and projects that have effectively spun out from Samsung. Inside — the earliest of the three stages — includes a

Foreign investors, mature startups redraw New Zealand’s VC funding landscape

Over the last two years, New Zealand’s startup scene has seen record venture and early-stage investment. Despite the pandemic, 2020 saw $158 million invested into 108 deals, representing the third year in a row of over $100 million in investment in startups. According to a PwC report, 2020 was also the third year of more than 20% year-over-year growth in dollars invested. “Early-stage investment as an asset class is maturing in New Zealand,” Suse Reynolds, chair of New Zealand’s Angel Association, a network that connects angel investors to business owners, wrote in the PwC report. “A noticeable trend is that deal sizes are getting larger as early-stage ventures and angel-backed ventures scale and require larger quantums of growth capital.” This boost in access to capital can be attributed to a few things. Even as a small country, New Zealand has a reputation for producing global companies, with notable exits like Vend, Seequent, Rocket Lab , Pushpay, Aroa Biosurgery, LanzaTech and X

How to avoid falling into China’s ‘data trap’

Dr. Samantha Hoffman Contributor Share on Twitter Dr. Samantha Hoffman is a senior analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s International Cyber Policy Centre and an independent consultant. The  TechCrunch Global Affairs Project  examines the increasingly intertwined relationship between the tech sector and global politics. Recent prominent data breach incidents, such as hacks of the Office of Personnel Management , airline passenger lists and hotel guest data have made clear how vulnerable both public and private systems remain to espionage and cybercrime. What is less obvious is the way that a foreign adversary or competitor might target data that is less clearly relevant from a national security or espionage perspective. Today, data about public sentiment, such as the kinds of data used by advertisers to analyze consumer preferences, has become as strategically valuable as data about traditional military targets. As the definition of what is strategicall

Stop creating self-fulfilling prophecies: How to apply AI to small data problems

Amnon Mishor Contributor Share on Twitter Amnon Mishor is the CTO and founder of Leadspace , an industry-recognized , AI-powered buyer data platform used by B2B companies like Zoom and Salesforce. Over the past decade or so, the digital revolution has given us a surplus of data. This is exciting for a number of reasons, but mostly in terms of how AI will be able to further revolutionize the enterprise. However, in the world of B2B — the industry I’m deeply involved in — we are still experiencing a shortage of data, largely because the number of transactions is vastly lower compared to B2C. So, in order for AI to deliver on its promise of revolutionizing the enterprise , it must be able to solve these small data problems as well. Thankfully, it can. The problem is that many data scientists turn to bad practices, creating self-fulfilling prophecies, which reduces the effectiveness of AI in small data scenarios — and ultimately hinders AI’s influence in advancing the enter

Gift Guide: TechCrunch’s Favorite Things of 2021

We made it, friends. Another year in the books. Was it the very normal year we all wanted? No. But, for many, it was at least a step in that direction. Or maybe two steps in that direction, and one step back. Yeah, it was still a weird one. No matter the year, we here at TechCrunch like to cap it off with a list of our favorite things from the last 365-or-so days. As always, “things” here is defined… very loosely. “Things” here can be books. Or podcasts. Or concepts. Or people! Or games, or songs, or… it doesn’t matter really. If it made that person’s 2021 a little brighter — and regardless of whether or not those things were new  to 2021 — it can go on the list. Why? Because we like to do it, and because people tell us they like reading it. And because it’s a fun little glimpse into the head spaces of the people who make this little piece of the Internet exist. Plus if you’re still looking for some last minute gift, maybe you’ll find some sort of inspiration. Here we go! — Greg
